Challenges
When representing the company at conferences and external events focused on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEI-A), it is essential for employees to be well-versed in key DEI-A talking points, organizational actions, and foundational principles of multicultural competence.
The primary challenge was ensuring that all volunteers received consistent, comprehensive information while also maintaining engagement and relevance throughout the training.
Solutions
The project charter outlined the development of an enhanced Instructor-Led Training (ILT) PowerPoint presentation, a quick reference guide, an internal phone tool award, and a self-directed eLearning module. Deliverables included an ILT presentation with comprehensive presenter notes, an interactive eLearning course built in Storyline and hosted on the company’s LMS, and a web-based job aid accessible via AWS S3.
The ILT materials were redesigned to incorporate more interactivity and consistency. While the original PowerPoint addressed key learning objectives, it lacked engagement opportunities. To address this, breakout sessions were added, enabling learners to discuss key topics and apply theories in a risk-free environment. Facilitator notes were expanded to ensure consistent delivery regardless of the presenter, enhancing reliability and learner outcomes.
The quick reference guide addressed the need for accessible, field-ready support. In line with Amazon's paperless initiatives, a web-based format was developed, providing volunteers easy access at events while minimizing environmental impact.
To scale the program effectively, a standalone eLearning course was created. This solution offers learners flexibility to complete training on their schedule without requiring live facilitation. To mitigate the absence of peer-driven, hands-on practice, branching scenarios were integrated into the eLearning, enabling learners to engage with realistic situations and apply their skills in a dynamic, interactive environment.
This comprehensive approach ensures scalable, engaging, and accessible learning solutions aligned with Amazon's operational and environmental values.
Results
The training solution has delivered exceptional results since its launch. The eLearning module has significantly improved efficiency, saving the DEI-A team over 48 hours of productive time annually. Learner satisfaction is notably high, with initial net promoter scores achieving an impressive 100% within the first two months.
The revamped ILT has empowered the original project manager to delegate in-person training sessions to the broader DEI Talent Acquisition team, increasing operational flexibility and enabling more frequent delivery of ILT sessions. This strategic delegation ensures scalability and sustained alignment with organizational goals.
